College basketball is one of the easier pathways to get to the national league. A majority of players who get drafted to the NBA are those who have been successful in college basketball. Playing in college is something that a lot of athletes take seriously. However, not many are successful enough to play in the best basketball league in the world. It takes a lot of effort to have that thing that makes one standout. I talked to a former basketball player who gave some key insight into the tough lessons that college players must learn. The three tough lessons that a former college basketball player learned include:
- Internal Motivation is essential to success
As a college basketball player, it is important to be internally driven. No amount of motivation can help a player to success in the league. The college basketball league is very challenging and competitive. A few mistakes made in a game will see a player not getting picked to play in the following games. These are factors that demotivate a person. There is also the issue of injuries that can really slow a player’s career down. If you’re not internally motivated, it is very easy to make the decision to quit. With internal motivation, a player will always have a drive that pushes them to tackle the challenges of the league. For example, if they are not getting picked to play, they will likely work hard to be impressive again. Therefore, internal motivation is crucial for a player to be successful in college basketball.
2. Personal Skills Trainers may be Harmful
This second lesson may be an unpopular opinion, but from experience, it has some truth to it. It is great to be able to afford a personal skills trainer to help propel a player to professional levels. However, the use of a personal trainer may not always yield the expected results. Personal trainers typically train the player to gain unique skills that make them different from a typical basketball player. The personal trainers tend to be very intense. A lot of players will fail to achieve their skill goals if they skip the basics and jump straight to the professional styles. Take for example getting a professional teacher to train a child on algebra when they have not mastered addition and subtraction. Such a set-up reduces the child’s ability to learn anything at all. Nonetheless, this does not mean that a trainer is not useful. If a player has to get a trainer, they must get one who understands them and is willing to develop them gradually.
3. There Is no Better way to succeed than Practice
The parents of college basketball players do a lot just to help their children become professionals. Some even spend a lot of money to pay for leagues so that their children can be given a chance to play. As a college player who cannot afford to do all these things, it is easy for one to feel like they are disadvantaged. However, such players should learn that there is no better way to succeed that to practice. Practice makes perfect. This is the main tool that one needs to have a chance to be successful in professional basketball.
Although College basketball is challenging you have to approach it with the same mentality to be successful and motivate other to strive for excellence with you.
